Some weeds have adapted to survive in compacted soils. Soils that are compacted are difficult for many plants to grow in and give weeds a competitive advantage.

In North Carolina, the most common weeds you'll find in compacted soil are annual bluegrass, annual lespedeza, annual sedge, broadleaf plantain, corn speedwell, goosegrass, prostrate knotweed, and prostrate spurge.

If you're considering starting a garden plot in an area with these weeds, we strongly recommend a soil test.

Adding organic matter to garden soils can help alleviate compaction issues. Worm castings are an excellent source of organic matter!
