STORYTIME + TIPS for Driving Safely in Mexico

Last week, I told a new friend I was planning a road trip to Valladolid (a must-visit city—2hrs from Playa del Carmen, 1.5 from Tulum, and 1 from Cancún). She couldn’t believe I felt comfortable driving my own car and road tripping here.

Nowhere in the world is 100% safe but living in fear based on social media horror stories will keep you from experiencing the best life has to offer. When I decided to drive 4 days from South Carolina to Playa del Carmen, people told me I wouldn’t make it. The truth is, driving in Mexico can be safe and enjoyable if you do your research and take the right precautions.

My Tips for a Safe & Fun Road Trip in Mexico

✅ Do your research – Know the difference between toll roads (cuotas) and free roads (libres). Toll roads are safer, better maintained, and have roadside assistance.

🌞 Drive during the day – Roads are easier to navigate and services are more accessible.

📍 Use real-time navigation – Apps like Google Maps help avoid unexpected detours. Download offline maps in case you lose signal in rural areas.

⛽ Fuel up in advance – Some areas have long stretches without gas stations. Always gas up before hitting the road.

💰 Carry cash – Many toll booths and smaller gas stations do not accept cards.

🚔 Know local laws & be prepared for checkpoints – Carry your driver’s license, car paperwork, and at least a photo of your passport.

🚙 Renting a Car - Stick to reputable car rental companies to avoid scams. ALWAYS inspect the car and take photos/videos of any damage before leaving the lot. Beware of “mandatory” insurance upcharges—your credit card may already cover you.

🚨 Emergency Numbers in Mexico
📞 911 – General Emergency
🚛 078 – Green Angels (roadside assistance)
🚓 088 – Federal Police (road safety concerns)

Mexico has it all—deserts, jungles, coastlines, historic cities, and charming pueblos where abuelas will feed you like their own—road-tripping lets you explore at your own pace, stop in local towns, and experience the culture. Buses and colectivos are great options too—there’s always ways to explore! #méxico #drivinginmexico #roadtripmexico #drivesafe #travelsmart
