Here’s part 2 of taking a look at our west side residential colleges here at ucsc! 🌲If you haven’t seen part 1, take a look at our previous post to see all colleges! 🏡 Learn about them below ⬇️

Rachel Carson: Rachel Carson College has been a crucial component of the university’s world renowned Environmental, Ecological and Sustainability programs and initiatives. Their Sustainability Studies Minor has the distinction of being the only minor offered through one of our ten Colleges at UCSC, rather than being offered through a Department.

Oakes: Oakes College is a multicultural community committed to equality and freedom from oppression and to providing the highest quality education to students from diverse backgrounds. Their core course, Communicating Diversity for a Just Society, seeks to help students appreciate the fundamental role of higher education in identifying and solving some of the critical problems facing our nation and the world.

Porter: Porter College was founded in 1969 as the fifth of UC Santa Cruz’s residential colleges. Porter is especially dedicated to achievement in the arts, believing that creative inquiry is an essential part of a rigorous and broad-minded education, a flourishing society, and a happy life.

John R Lewis (JRL): Founded in Fall 2002, John R. Lewis College is the newest college at UCSC. Consistent with UCSC’s founding vision, John R. Lewis College creates an integrated living-and-learning environment through engaging academic and extracurricular programs focusing on the theme of Social Justice and Community. John R. Lewis College is situated in a redwood grove next to the Social Sciences I and II buildings near the heart of campus.

Kresge College welcomes students from all backgrounds to their home in the redwoods, and strive to give them a small college learning experience that prioritizes personal and intellectual growth, practical experience, and a sense of community. Their curriculum enables students to live and learn with intention and purpose, to attend the natural world around them, and work to solve social, political, and ecological problems
