The best classroom any young goaltender or, for that matter, aspiring goaltenders that are coming up through the ranks can have is free. Just watching a random game last night between Philadelphia and Montreal, there were so many great learning opportunities from situations that happened in last night‘s game. I like to take a look at the difficult or good goals against and learn how the goaltender could have put himself in a better position.

A common theme many of the goaltenders I coach will hear me talk about is time and space. With the skill of today’s players, if you are too conservative, it gives them the time and space to make a move to get you to commit and plenty of space to shoot it. On this play last night, Samuel Ersson gets a good read of where the player is going to receive the pass. While he achieve a good squareness on the play, the player has too much space to operate in. Being able to get a good read of where the players is going to receive the pass, particularly the proximal distance from your crease, and knowing the range where you are comfortable to just jam and smother the play will allow you to make the difficult saves in tight. If you allow players to feel comfortable around the crease with the skill sets that they possess, your ability to make saves in the grade an areas is going to be challenging.
