President Donald Trump on Monday appointed his former personal defense lawyer Alina Habba as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Habba, a native of the Garden State, defended Trump in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case and recently served as Trump’s presidential counselor. Sharing his decision via Truth Social, the president said he is confident Habba will succeed in the role.

Alina will lead with the same diligence and conviction that has defined her career, and she will fight tirelessly to secure a Legal System that is both ‘Fair and Just’ for the wonderful people of New Jersey,” Trump wrote.
Habba accepted the appointment and called out Sen. Corey Booker, D-N.J., in a statement to reporters Monday.

“There is corruption, there is injustice and there is a heavy amount of crime right in Cory Booker’s backyard and right under Governor Murphy and that will stop,” she said. “I look forward to working with Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice in making sure we further the president’s agenda of putting America first.”

She continued by referring to New Jersey as a “neglected state.”
