In 2001, while living in Honduras, God gave me a vision: I would use my talents of storytelling and videography to exalt him, and my future family would go into the nations to serve him. A few years later, after studying in Mexico and working hard, I became a well-known filmmaker in my country. I also got married and had a son in 2012. Forming a family and becoming a father had always been dreams of mine, so it was confusing to me when I got divorced a couple of years later.

Around this time, my mom moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and was led by the Spirit to come to Lutheran Church of Hope. She told me how they had things going on all year and played movie clips with every sermon. “You would be so happy serving here,” she said. This caught my attention, and after experiencing how God was moving at Hope, I came to worship every time I visited. She was insistent on me coming to live in Iowa, but I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving my son.

Some years passed, and by God’s design, my son (7 at the time) was given the opportunity to move to California. I had to make a choice: say no and have him stay with me or let him go to experience an exciting future. With a hole in my heart, I signed the necessary papers.

Four years passed. In that time, I got remarried and had my second amazing son. But God’s promise of going into the nations with my family felt like a distant echo. One night, after being at Hope on one of my trips to visit my mom, God spoke to me—not in an audible voice, yet I heard him: “Hold on to my promises.” I cried and praised God even though my heart was hurting because my family was divided.

Then God gave my wife, my youngest son, and me the blessing of coming to Iowa. I applied to work at Hope in their studio department, thinking it was a long shot, but God had great plans. The job was given to me by the grace of God and made it possible to be reunited with my older son, who joined us in Iowa. Now I’m with my family in a new nation, exalting him with my talents.

God keeps his promises and does so in the most amazing, unexpected ways. Keep trusting him, because if he says it, he’ll do it.
