## Caption

A rare smelt dipping season brought crowds to the Sandy River on March 27. For just seven hours, people lined the banks in the rain to dip net eulachon — small, oily fish that only return to the Sandy occasionally, and in small windows.

The fish once played a vital role for Native communities, who used their fat for oil and candles. This was only the third time in the last decade that dipping was allowed.
