On the heels of lowa's new law eliminating transgender civil rights, Selene Grisham is among the lowans fearing she will lose her "rights to exist.” The 35-year-old transgender woman from #DesMoines worries that the new Republican-passed law removing gender identity as a protected class from the lowa Civil Rights Act will thwart her long-awaited efforts to change her legal name and gender marker on her birth certificate. The new law Gov. #KimReynolds signed last month effectively removes protections for transgender and nonbinary lowans against discrimination in housing, employment and more. In addition, the new law removes a section in lowa Code that currently allows a transgender person who transitions to receive a new birth certificate reflecting their gender identity with a doctor's affidavit confirming their transition.
