The importance of patience and knowing your net:

One trend that has been noticeable is the amount of goaltenders who are over committing/anticipating the short side shot, particularly from left-handed shooters on the left wing, and right handed Shooters on the right wing. You will notice on this play from yesterday in the Syer/Flyers game, when Matvei Michkov gets his shot off, Luukkonen is actually in perfect position. He over shifts and the puck squeezes between his hip and arm. Being he is a larger goaltender, he gets a fortunate carom and the puck does not go in. 

In many instances, when a goaltender gets beat, it is due to them moving too much. It is absolutely key to work on your footwork and your positioning, because this will give you the confidence and patience to hold your net and realize the true amount that you need to move. While this shot does not go in, it is important that this does not become a regular habit, as the goaltender makes the save, but his body momentum is going away from the rebound. It is fortunate in this instance, as there is no weak side pressure to pounce on the rebound. If you can consistently get your bodyweight going to where your eyes are going, you will be in position and, most importantly, you will control the shot. If Luukkonen holds his edges here, the shot would’ve hit him right in the jersey crest. Goaltenders, at practice, try to feel out if your weight is going into the shot or transferring fully into the pass. The rewards that you will reap will significantly improve your game.
