Last year, over 100 countries signed the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) in a historic win for ocean conservation. Spearheaded by the High Seas Alliance, this treaty aims to protect over 60% of our oceans that lie beyond national jurisdiction. But there’s a major roadblock.

Sixty countries must ratify the treaty for it to actually become international law, and the goal is to secure this by the UN Ocean Conference this June. So far, only 15 countries have ratified.

While this might seem discouraging, there’s hope! Ratification takes time, and many nations are making progress. Meanwhile, the High Seas Alliance is collaborating with scientists, communities, and governments to ensure Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are ready to launch as soon as the treaty takes effect.

The high seas are critical for regulating Earth’s climate and biodiversity. The longer we wait, the longer they remain vulnerable to exploitation like deep-sea mining, trawling, and whaling.

You can help keep the pressure on—find petitions in your country, email your representatives, and follow highseasalliance for updates!
