Walruses are the unmistakable icons of the Arctic, with their impressive tusks and whiskery faces.

While they are related to seals and sea lions, those tusks sure set them apart! These versatile tools help walruses haul their hefty bodies onto the ice, fend off predators, and settle disputes during breeding season. They have 400–700 ultra-sensitive whiskers called vibrissae that help them sniff out marine morsels buried in the seafloor.

Though walruses are fantastic swimmers, spending two-thirds of their lives in the water, they’re tied to the sea ice for resting, socializing, and raising their young. Calves stick close to their moms for up to two years as they learn the ropes.

With thick blubber to keep them warm, walruses thrive in the Arctic—when there’s ice. But as sea ice disappears, their survival is increasingly at risk.
