“Indigenous wisdom is essential in the fight to protect our ocean. Their deep understanding of nature, honed over millennia, holds the key to a future where both people and wildlife can thrive.” – Cristina Mittermeier, SeaLegacy co-founder

Last week, Mitty headed to South Dakota for the 12th convening of the World Wilderness Congress, dubbed “WILD12.” The environmental forum has brought world leaders, experts, and activists together since its inception in the 1970s. This year’s congress was entirely Indigenous-led, with speakers from tribes and communities worldwide sharing their traditional knowledge deeply rooted in the land and sea. Their insights are invaluable to key decision-making processes that support a healthy planet.

While in attendance, Mitty joined mission_blue and WildFoundation to introduce a resolution calling on governments to finally ratify the High Seas Treaty. Since its adoption last year, only 8 of the 60 required countries have officially ratified the treaty, which incorporates Indigenous rights into a legal framework for the protection of ocean waters beyond national jurisdiction. The high seas comprise over 60% of our global ocean and are in urgent need of protections. We are thrilled to report the resolution was adopted by the WILD12 delegates, bringing hope to marine wildlife and to the millions of people who depend on the ocean’s resources.

Get ready to take a deeper dive next week into what this resolution means and the role of Indigenous wisdom in conservation within the next issue of katiecouricmedia’s ‘Ripple Effect.’ #WILD12 #HighSeasTreaty #IndigenousWisdom
