Southern right whales are among the ocean’s true giants, yet they also stand as one of its most endangered inhabitants.

But who are these enigmatic creatures of the deep? To find them, one must journey to the Southern Hemisphere, where their vast migration sweeps from the frigid Antarctic seas to the sunlit shores of Australia. Here, along these remote coastlines, you’ll encounter these majestic beings—stretching up to 16 meters (~52 feet), their dark bodies adorned with intricate white markings like the strokes of a painter’s brush upon a midnight canvas.

Every year, these whales undertake an epic voyage from Antarctica to the sheltered coves of the Great Australian Bight, a marine sanctuary framed by towering cliffs that stand sentinel over the vibrant life below. In these sheltered waters, the Southern right whales come to breed and raise their young, their gentle presence a reminder of the ocean’s fragile balance and boundless beauty.

Yet, these majestic beings do more than captivate the eye—they play an essential role in the health of our planet. Southern right whales act as living vessels of carbon, storing it within their colossal bodies and ultimately sequestering it in the deep sea. As they traverse the ocean, they carry with them vital nutrients, nourishing the seas by feeding on plankton and enriching the waters with their releases. This sustains the phytoplankton, the nearly invisible marine life that produces approximately half of the Earth’s oxygen, connecting the whales’ existence to the very air we breathe.

To delve deeper into the world of these gentle giants, explore the extraordinary role whales play around the world in the health of our ocean at the link in our bio.
