Though it has no expressive eyes to meet our gaze or a familiar face to offer a knowing glance, coral is a living, breathing animal. And it is sending us an urgent signal that it is in dire need of our help: a stark transformation to white, as the coral casts away the bounty of vibrant colors that once adorned the canvas of a former flourishing reef.

“When corals get really stressed and they start expelling their little microalgae, sometimes they become incredibly colorful, [glowing] brilliant blues and greens and magentas. It looks like something beautiful. But what’s happening is [similar to] a coral reef with a fever. It is dying. And it’s something that’s eerily beautiful to see and watch from our human eyes. But what you’re seeing is the death of an ecosystem,” co-founder Cristina Mittermeier.

However, in the world’s largest coral reef system, hope remains.
