We join in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a visionary leader who deeply valued the role of the arts in shaping our nation’s culture and identity.
 
A frequent attendee of the Kennedy Center and steadfast supporter of the arts, Carter celebrated the unifying power of music and culture throughout his presidency. Notably, he designated June as Black Music Month, honoring the contributions of Black artists to American history and culture.
 
Pictured here is President Carter at the 1977 Inaugural Ball, receiving the very first class of Kennedy Center Honorees at the White House in 1978, meeting members of New York City Ballet, attending a performance in the Opera House with First Lady Rosalynn Carter in 1979, and on stage with 1990 #KCHonors recipient Dizzy Gillespie.
