Would you plant a chip or electrode into your brain? What if the chip helped you combat depression or epilepsy?

Enter Brain-Computer Interfaces, aka BCIs. 🧠 

BCI is a direct communication pathway between the brain’s electrical activity and an external device, most commonly a computer or robotic limb. BCIs are often directed at researching, mapping, assisting, augmenting, or repairing human cognitive or sensory-motor functions.

In the short term, BCIs can be used to help stroke patients write again, or paralyzed patients type on their iPhones. In the long term, BCI technology could be used to increase human intelligence by connecting your mind to the cloud, or augment humans’ physical abilities.

In a recent TKS session in Ottawa, many students were exposed to BCI technology for the first time. TKS students were asked to solve a real problem, like Mutism (a form of brain damage that causes difficulty speaking) using BCIs and go deep to explain what is happening in our brains and how BCIs could be applied. They then presented their ideas to the entire cohort as if they were pitching to a real company for a chance to win $100,000 in investment funding.
