Are you ready to have making inferences and drawing conclusions in the bag? 🚮😉

Check out this experience that will take an ordinary (actually boring) skill and make it extraordinary for your students. 

You will want to alert the students that you have found some mystery trash. I always make up a story that I am trying to learn about my neighbors because they are so noisy and loud, but I never actually see them come out of their house (super spooky, amiright? 🤪). But you could also create trash profiles for individuals in your school that students may know well, story characters, etc. 

Teacher note: You guys, I literally collected this trash the night before. You can print things off the internet and rip them up so they have to piece them together; you can collect boxes from your pantry or bathroom of products that would fit the theme, empty bottles, etc. 8-10 pieces is MORE than enough for each bag! 

I introduce the lesson by modeling and allowing the students to practice one bag together. Then I separate them into CSI teams and they work on a bag individually and collectively. You could always have them rotate to multiple bags in one lesson if they are moving quickly. 

The students have to make logical inferences for each piece of trash. Then, at the end, they work to piece together inferences to draw a strong conclusion supported by factual evidence. It is SUCH an important reading skill, but also one they HATE to practice. 

The best part is that these storylines can also tie directly into a creative writing opportunity. Have them write about the “character profiles” they discovered during the lesson. Or choose their favorite storyline of trash to write about! 

So. Much. Fun. And you can go as spooky or as nice as you’d like, depending on the grade level you teach. But let’s be honest, how fun would it be to create a trash profile for Jasper Rabbit in the book Creepy Pair of Underwear this season?
