Writing a strong informational paragraph doesn’t have to be scary for all involved. 👀

Let’s talk about a simple way to motivate our writers and give them a strong visual that will act as a future tool for ensuring that our students include essential pieces of an informational paragraph. Have you ever asked your students to revise their writing, and 10 minutes later, they bring you the Same! Exact! Paper? This is for you.

#1 Teach the structure: I have always found major success with the hamburger model paragraph. So, I teach my students the structure using this model. Top Bun = Topic Sentence. They must have three key details to represent the meat on their burger. Then we expand each detail with the extra examples - lettuce, ketchup, mustard. Finally, we complete our burger with the bottom bun = closing sentence. But since it’s Halloween, let’s transform the ordinary burger into a MONSTER burger.

#2 Practice: How does this structure tie into the revision process? I have them use highlighters to check. Yellow for their top bun and bottom bun. Pink for their meat (3 detail sentences). Green for their explanations (should have one to expand each detail).

#3 Create: After they complete the highlighting stage, they use the materials to build a visual of their burger. They can ONLY build what they have highlighted. This will give them a strong visual of what they are missing. They can go back and add missing pieces for a revision that makes sense. After I teach this process, it never fails that at least one student will draw a burger model each time we write informational pieces. That visual process is strong!
