## Caption

Having gone without food all winter and giving birth beneath the snow, a mother polar bear finally emerges from her den with her young cubs. It will be some time before she finally sets out with her little family to the sea ice where she can finally break her nearly 8-month fast. I have walked in the footsteps of animals like polar bears since I was a child growing up in the Arctic. The greatest gifts in my life have always come from nature and sharing them with the world through photography is my way of giving back.
