Today on #WorldAutismDay I want to introduce you to my not-so-little sister, Kathy.

As the youngest of a trio of girls, Kathy has always kept our family on their toes with her outspoken confidence and creativity. When she was little, all it took was one mischievous smile and a flash of those sparkling baby blue eyes and there was little she couldn’t convince you to do. Despite her many artistic gifts, Kathy struggled to meet milestones as a child and was labeled as having a learning disability. She had difficulty connecting with her peers and often felt misunderstood in social situations. Her frustration with communicating her thoughts and emotions often led to tantrums… lots of them. Most people chalked it up to her being “spoiled” or a “brat”. Things that came easily to me and our other sister just didn’t click for Kathy.

Never one to give up easily, Kathy persevered; she graduated high school and eventually enrolled in a culinary program after discovering her love for baking and pastry arts. She later launched her own home baking business and became the entrepreneur she always wanted to be. Many years later, while living with me and my husband, therapy led Kathy to the answer that I quietly wondered about her entire life… at the age of 31, Kathy was diagnosed as autistic.

It’s only been a couple of years since that diagnosis that changed Kathy’s life - for the better. The day that she heard the word autistic is the day I feel that Kathy was set free. Autism might be considered a disability, but those that know Kathy know that it truly is her superpower.

April is World Autism Month. I invite you to join me in supporting the work of autismspeaks as we help create a more inclusive, understanding and supportive world for autistic individuals like Kathy everywhere. To make an even bigger impact I will be matching donations the entire month of April. 💙
