At the 2025 Chief Engineers & Facility Managers Conference, Mike Larson, Director of Utility Operations at Abbott Power Plant, highlighted how the Urbana campus stays cool efficiently.

🔹 26 miles of underground piping deliver 42°F chilled water to 138 buildings
🔹 A $50M upgrade in 2004 reduced cooling energy consumption by 20%
🔹 The latest Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) project (valued at $2.5M) guarantees $264,971 in annual energy cost savings
🔹 The OptimumLOOP software continuously optimizes system performance, reducing energy use and maintenance costs
