Voltron: Defender of the Universe established early on that the Lions lair in particular dens:

Blue lairs underwater. Red lairs within a volcano. Yellow in the desert. Green in a forest. And Black stands vigil over The Castle Of Lions.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t explained why in the 5-part pilot. In fact, we didn’t learn the reason for the environmentally coded dens until episode 29, Magnetic Attraction.

When Blue Lion won’t activate, the ghost of King Alfor appears before his daughter to poetically explain that each Lion draws power from different natural energies.

Some of what the King said lined up with viewers’ assumptions, but other details were new information.
