Fandoms can get weird. 

And we say that as big fans of weird! 

One of our favorite weird moments in the Voltron fandom was when everyone suddenly agreed that KEITH LOVES HIPPOS! There was Keith Loves Hippos fan art, scene edits, and running gags in every corner of the Voltron Internet. Now, with #MooDeng mania running wild, we keep thinking back on when the fandom became obsessed with Keith’s favorite animal. 

The downside to these moments in time is that they are baffling to anyone who missed them. Anyone coming in late usually has to settle for “you had to be there,” it’s just too challenging to explain.

Well we like a challenge!

The Keith Loves Hippos meme came out of The Paladin's Handbook, an official Voltron: Legendary Defender companion book written by R. J. Cregg and published by Simon Spotlight. This guide featured colorful splash pages with vital information and interesting trivia about the characters and the world of Legendary Defender. 

We’ve seen it explained that The Paladin's Handbook lists hippos as Keith’s favorite animal in his bio. That's not right. The real answer isn’t so straight forward. 

The Paladin's Handbook includes a survey called Which Lion Should You Pilot? It asks a series of multiple-choice questions, each with five options. One of the stranger questions was question 3: “You’re going to cryo-sleep for ten thousand years. Which animal do you hope shares your cryo-pod?”

After you finish, the survey says that if you gave more B answers than any other letter, you should pilot the Red Lion. Red was Keith’s Lion when the book came out. And answer 3B was “Hippopotamus”. 

Between the work a reader had to do to find out this fact, the bizarre image of Keith squeezing into a cryo-pod with a full-sized Hippopotamus, and the lack of any explanation, the fandom ran with the only conclusion that made sense: Keith just loves hippos!
