He looks at me like I’m insane. I might as well be. It takes a few seconds for him to recover from the whiplash of my words’ implications.

Then, a slow smug grin rises on his lips and our mutual understanding calms the air around us. He leans back against the railing and looks out again.

“Convenient?”

I purse my lips and give him a knowing glance. “And pretty.”

He chuckles and takes another drag, smoke wafting up the features of his face as he exhales.

“Did he like you?”

I stifle an amused and bitter laugh in my throat. “Probably not. And I didn’t, not really. But he liked the attention and I did too. Ate it up like candy. It was fun for a while but now that it’s over, I don’t really 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 anymore.”

“Damn,” he mutters under his breath and he flicks the cigarette into the abyss. We watch the red glow disappear into river of hovercars below. The back of my throat is taut and I grip the railing just enough to feel my nails scratch the paint off the metal.

My eyes drift, unfocused, watching the lights blur below. I’m hypnotized by the city once more and I’m starting to regret being away for so long.

“You’re becoming more and more like me.”
