Let’s take it back to the 80s and 90s—decades filled with cassettes, VCRs, radios, and those good ol’ flyers on bulletin boards! ✨

Before diving into 1980, it’s essential to recognize the cultural and educational context occurring in the Northeast, and more specifically, at Rutgers University New Brunswick, prior to the emergence of our sisterhood. 

In the 1970s, Rutgers University New Brunswick experienced significant growth in Latino and Caribbean culture, largely driven by the initiatives of Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) students. Their calls for change led to the creation of what is now the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies, sparking the rise of organizations celebrating Latino and Caribbean culture on campus.🦉

In 1980, seven Latina women founded Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. to create a supportive sisterhood, promote cultural awareness, raise educational visibility, and empower women on campus. Their focus on independence, community, education, leadership, and mutual respect fostered a “home away from home.” 🌺

Chi Upsilon Sigma grew rapidly over the next two decades, expanding with over 15 chapters in the 80s and 90s. From New Jersey, it spread to regions like North Texas, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut, cementing its legacy as a force for empowering, educating, and elevating ALL women.

The foundation built during these formative years continues to burn bright in the present. We owe a great deal to the sisters of these decades who laid the foundation for the connections that continue to expand today.
