How does a stingray get an ultrasound? ⚕️🩺

Well, your Toronto Zoo recently completed routine health assessments on the freshwater stingrays in the Americas Pavilion 🌊

Through our comprehensive preventative medicine program which involves a One Well-being approach, each stingray underwent a complete physical examination. This involved sedating each ray by placing them in water that contained an anesthetic agent. The exam started with obtaining measurements of their body length and width. A thorough examination included looking at every inch of the ray's body to ensure there were no external abnormalities. 

We also looked into their mouth to assess the dental plates which are essentially small tile-like teeth that allows them to crush/grind their diet items. Each ray had an endoscopic examination to visualize their gills. 

Are you aware? An ultrasound is an integral part of a stingray exam and allows us to evaluate the internal organs. A heart rate could be counted while evaluating the four-chambered heart. The liver size was evaluated and helped determine the body condition. Stingrays have a relatively short gastrointestinal tract, but each section (esophagus, stomach, intestine) was observed during the scan. No abnormalities or concerns were identified during the ultrasounds. We also took the opportunity to collect blood for comprehensive analysis. This included tests for inflammatory disease, organ function, nutritional status, and overall systemic health. 

At the end of the examination, a special stain was used on their eyes to verify that no ulcer or micro-trauma was present. The rays were then weighed, while being moved into anesthetic-free water for recovery. 

We're happy to report that the information gained from these preventative health examinations confirmed that the freshwater stingrays are all in excellent health.
