Today is #ReversetheRedDay - an annual celebration of some incredible conservation science efforts happening here at your Toronto Zoo and around the globe. These efforts are helping to halt the decline of species and ecosystems 🌿🌱

Reverse the Red is a global movement that ignites strategic cooperation and action to ensure the survival of wild species and ecosystems and reverse the negative trend of biodiversity loss. 

Through a strategic initiative, Reverse the Red brings together a diverse coalition of leading scientists, advocates, landowners, Indigenous knowledge holders and partners committed to using a data-driven and science-based approach to assess, plan, and act for species conservation. As Guardians of Wild, we are committed to being part of that coalition.

Are you aware? A near one-third of species worldwide face extinction - including a number of species here at your Zoo which act as important ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. 

In Canada specifically, over 40% of federally listed species-at-risk require conservation translocations. We’re responding with many different ways as we assist partners from around the world with species recovery efforts. From reintroducing species to breeding programs, we’re envisioning and working quickly towards living in a world where wildlife and wild spaces thrive.

Today, and with our conservation partners at Reverse the Red, your Zoo is:

🌎 Species Recovery Planning, which includes Breeding and Translocation
🌎 Ex-situ Population Management/Research
🌎 Genetic Population Management/Biobanking
🌎 Braiding Western and Traditional Knowledge to Protect Species
🌎 Engaging Storytelling and Guest Interaction
