A 404 story. It’s not a secret that running can be intimidating to some people. Add that fear to being in a large crowd while doing it and it becomes easy to understand why many Atlantans find a reason to never “join a run club.” As someone who was once in those shoes, Atlanta Run Club co-captain Maurice Garland tries his best to help people see past those mental barriers and make them feel like “you’re with us now.”

Every Monday when he hosts our flagship run at Ponce City Market he works alongside his fellow run leads and ARC welcome crew to create an inviting atmosphere for every runner, whether they are taking their first steps or recovering from their last marathon. He’s known to many as a longtime journalist and event host who has written for a slew of publications including AJC, Billboard, Complex and XXL. To others he’s remembered for hosting shows for the likes of Big Boi, Kendrick Lamar and Travis $cott. But in the running community Garland feels seen as someone who gets to bring his worlds together playing music and engaging the crowd every week, hoping to keep the vibes high before runners hit the streets.

As you can see from the grey hairs, Garland has been around for a while. But running didn’t enter his life until he hit his 30’s and decided to live a healthier lifestyle. His journey started off mostly solo until he linked with OG Atlanta running crew Movers + Pacers when they started in 2013. It was here that he grew to appreciate the community and social aspect of running. It also helped him see the city he loved in a new light now that he was touching the pavement and actually taking in the sights, smells and sounds he used to just drive past. 

Since joining ARC in summer 2022, Garland has strived to help runners see and feel Atlanta for all that it is. Whether it’s taking natives on paths and distances they never knew existed or pointing out what “used to be there” for transplants on long run routes, the Decatur native cherishes the opportunity to rep his city while doing something he loves.
