Pre-war elegance | 1938 Bentley 4¼-Litre Drophead Coupé 🇬🇧 

Finished in a striking combination of Burgundy and silver with a beautifully trimmed interior, this 1938 Bentley 4¼-Litre Drophead Coupé presents with timeless elegance and a specification that perfectly complements its pre-war grandeur.

Delivered new to Mr. A.H. Bowkett of Margate, a bakery owner, the Bentley was sold through Rootes and likely delivered by Martin Walter, as indicated by a dashboard plaque. After its early years in the UK, the car was exported to the United States, where it received a repaint and was displayed in a Palm Beach museum. In 1987, it was discovered by Bentley Drivers Club member Harry Fuchs and brought back to the UK, where it was acquired by the current owners in 1988. Its first outing under their care was a trip to the Monaco Grand Prix, a journey it completed effortlessly, before becoming a familiar sight at BDC events and rallies.

In 2008, the car was relocated to New Zealand and used regularly until its return to the UK in 2014 for a multi-year, meticulous restoration. Upgrades include a new aluminium cylinder head, an overdrive unit by Paynes, rebuilt steering and chassis lubrication systems, and a full rewire with braided loom. The car was also treated to a bare-metal respray, refurbished woodwork, new carpets, and a fresh hood cover. Maintaining excellent oil pressure and starting reliably “on the button,” this finely restored Bentley stands ready for the next chapter in its storied life.
