Dave Portnoy’s reaction to the Signal group chat scandal struck a nerve — and for good reason.

After top U.S. officials — including Mike Waltz, J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, and John Ratcliffe — added a reporter, The Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, to an unsecure Signal group chat discussing sensitive military operations, Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy didn’t deflect or defend. He demanded accountability.

That matters.

In a culture where political loyalty often takes priority over principle, it’s rare — and powerful — when someone is willing to call out mistakes within their own camp. That’s not betrayal. It’s responsibility. And it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce polarization.

In-group criticism helps rebuild trust. It signals to others that this isn’t about winning for your team, it’s about doing what’s right.

If more people had the courage to speak up when their own “side” crosses the line, we might spend less time pointing fingers and more time fixing what’s broken.
