Welcome to part 8 of SONIC DIVE: my new video series that tackles songs, songwriters and their legacy.

“Exhibit C” is a song by American hip hoprecording artist and record producer Jay Electronica. The song, produced by Just Blaze, was released to iTunes on December 22, 2009, as an EP with explicit, clean and instrumental versions.

Sampled Billy Stewart’s “Cross My Heart” 1968 

Despite not having an album or major label support, the song received airplay on stations like WQHT.

Jay has stated that the song was produced in only 15 minutes for the purpose of premiering a new song on Angela Yee’s show on Shade 45. The lyrics reference a time when Jay was homeless in New York City.

The EP cover art is a tinted photograph of inventor Nikola Tesla sitting in the Colorado Springs experimental station with his
“Magnifying Transmitter”

This was his “Magnifying Transmitter,” shooting sparks through the air at more than 4 MILLION VOLTS. It was part of Nikola Tesla’s effort to dispense with wires and have wireless transmission of energy. Note him calmly sitting in a chair below as 4 million volts arc over his head

A bidding war ensued with Jay finally signing (November 12, 2010) with Roc Nation.
His debut studio album, A Written Testimony (2020), was met with critical acclaim and entered the Billboard 200 at number 12; it was followed by his second album, Act II: The Patents of Nobility (The Turn) (2020) in October of that same year. His guest performance on Kanye West’s 2021 song, “Jesus Lord”, marked his first entry on the BillboardHot 100.
