Today, alongside our partners at yycarts and cityofcalgary, we are thrilled to share the highly anticipated design for the Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) project—a $70M revitalization that will reimagine this iconic downtown gathering space as a more modern, inclusive, accessible and flexible public plaza for generations to come.

Led by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) as development manager, and thoughtfully designed by the prime design team of gh3architects, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture; ccxa.landscape and Urban Design; and bellevilleplacemaking, the transformed Olympic Plaza blends form, function and legacy.

Informed by public engagement and guided by a shared vision for an inclusive civic space, the new design introduces a more accessible, barrier free layout to enable gatherings of up to 5,000 people, a sloped green space, a multi-season pavilion with food and beverage service and public washrooms, a skating rink in the winter and an iconic 12-metre central water feature inspired by Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympics logo, the ‘sunflake.’
The plaza's new design has been endorsed by the International Olympic Committee, and historic elements—like one of Calgary's Olympic cauldrons and a portion of the arches bearing the Latin phrase ""Citius, Altius, Fortius"" —are intentionally integrated to honour the site's legacy. 

Together, this design sets a new standard for adaptive, enduring public space in the heart of downtown.
Demolition of the plaza began in January 2025 to facilitate construction on the Arts Commons Transformation expansion, and construction on the plaza itself will begin in earnest in 2027, with ellisdoncorp serving as Construction Manager and colliersprojectleaders serving as Project Manager for both the ACT Expansion and OPT.
