During a joint news conference with Belgian Prime Minister, Ukrainian President #VolodymyrZelenskyy announced that the Ukrainian military had captured two Chinese men who were reportedly fighting alongside the Russians.

According to apnews, the two men were captured in the eastern Donetsk region. He further explained that a confrontation near the villages of Tarasivka and Bilohorivka occurred where six Chinese personnel encountered Ukrainian troops. Two of the men were taken as prisoners.

Ukraine says they have more information that there are “significantly more” Chinese nationals fighting alongside the Russians.

China has yet to respond to Zelenskyy’s claims. However, he says he’s asked his top diplomat “to immediately contact Beijing.” He noted that China would be the third country to provide Russia with military support, following behind Iran and North Korea.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, said on X, “Chinese citizens fighting as part of Russia’s invasion army in Ukraine puts into question China’s declared stance for peace and undermines Beijing’s credibility as a responsible permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.”

According to thehill, the US State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, criticized China while addressing the development. She said, “It’s disturbing with the Chinese soldiers having been captured. We’re aware of those reports. China is a major enabler of Russia in the war in Ukraine.
