The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA), an Agency of the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, announces that Canada has officially ratified Jamaica’s accession to the Hague Convention of 25 October 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (HCCH 1980), effective April 1, 2025. Canada now joins a list of 47 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, in recognising Jamaica under this important treaty, facilitating the prompt resolution of international child abduction cases between the two nations.
“This ratification strengthens our international partnerships in child protection, ensuring that children wrongfully taken from Jamaica to Canada, or vice versa, have a clear legal pathway for a safe and timely return.” Said Mrs. Laurette Adams Thomas, CEO of the CPFSA
“As Jamaica’s designated Central Authority for the Convention, the CPFSA has been instrumental in managing cross-border child protection matters with other countries who have previously ratified our accession. The inclusion of Canada now strengthens the reach and effectiveness of this Convention, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring that children are not unlawfully separated from their families,” Mrs. Adams-Thomas added.
