STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE: During Black History Month, the Knight Steppers went to schools around Austin and performed their routines, showcasing their skills to new audiences. The team went around elementary and middle schools. First-year member Maya Johnson was excited to be among her peers, performing for the first time at these schools. 

“We were expressing ourselves during Black History Month, and we were showing [the students] the stepping team,” Johnson said. “From what I’ve seen so far, a lot of people really like watching the team perform.”

During school assemblies, the step team would take the stage and showcase their dances, in which they utilized their bodies as instruments, creating sounds and rhythms through choreographed movements. 

“It was very fun, and I’m sure they also had a lot of fun because whenever I looked at their faces, they had wide eyes and big smiles,” Johnson said. “I feel like they all really enjoyed it though, and I had fun performing because I got to show off a lot of steps that I’ve learned.” 

Being on the step team, and able to perform was meaningful to Johnson, as it allowed her to influence students in her community and give them the opportunity to experience different cultures through dance. 

“I think it inspires a lot of kids because we are showing them and telling them to express themselves, which is very important to make sure that they don’t hide stuff that they can do,” Johnson said. “Stepping is a creative experience. It might be hard to learn sometimes, but you have a lot of fun doing it, so it’s good to have other kids be able to experience it too.”
