Did you know that #Amherstburg, Essex County was one of Ontario's largest Black communities in the 1800s? 📍

Located across from the Detroit River, Black women, men, and children sought refuge in this small Canadian town when fleeing the United States, and it soon became a thriving society of professionals, farmers, and skilled tradespeople.

August 1 marks the day that the Slavery Abolition Act, 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, including Canada. This #EmancipationDay, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of the Black community across the province, and reflect on the painful history of slavery and anti-Black racism in Ontario. #AmherstburgOntario
