Shirley Anita Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress, serving New York’s 12th district from 1969 to 1983. She worked on anti-poverty and education reform and helped create the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus. In 1972, she became the first woman to run for a major party’s presidential nomination. While she didn’t win, her campaign brought attention to issues important to Black Americans and women. She once said, “The door is not open yet, but it is ajar.”
