The 300 yard shuttle has nothing to do with demands of the sport of baseball. Baseball is dominated by alactic ability, or the ATP-PC energy system. I know this for one based upon the GPS data that we receive from our Catapult system as well as heart rate monitoring located within the sensor. It doesn’t take more than casual observation of the game itself to know the Anearobic-Glycolytic system doesn’t factor into the game of baseball….EVER. Just look at what the athletes do on field. They stand around for long periods of time separated by short bursts. The average distance of those bursts across an entire team is less than 6 yards at a time.
-
Baseball athletes sprint, rotate, and jump occasionally. There is no such need for a “conditioning” test that doesn’t even closely model the game. The actual game of baseball takes relatively little energy system development. If old men can drink beer while playing the game it tells you how little is demanded by other energy systems.
-
Teams often test a 300 yard shuttle at the beginning of the pre-season and then it never again factors into their training or daily activities of a baseball player. If it doesn’t matter during the most important time of the year….playing games… why do we waste time on it at all?
-
💥Because the field of baseball performance does what its always done.
💥We’re lazy in finding new solutions.
💥We’re lazy in letting higher ups know this isn’t valuable for our athletes.
💥We’re just lazy in allowing it to happen.
-
There are plenty of measurables in the game already. Speed matters…we can test that. Acceleration matters…we can test that. Use the measurables that factor into the game. Quit wasting energy on stuff that doesn’t matter!
