In 1981,10-year-old Cherie Montague raised a German Shepherd named Happy, while her younger brother, 7-year-old Emory, cared for a spirited Corgi named Freedom. These young pioneers helped launch a #volunteer movement at Canine Companions that continues to this day. 🐕‍🦺 

Over the years, the Montagues raised nine puppies of many breeds. When one of their dogs, Marin, was selected as a breeder dog, the family became the organization’s first volunteer breeder caretakers, ultimately raising four litters of future #servicedogs. They also cared for a male breeder dog, a Corgi named Bolts. 

More than 40 years later, Cherie returned to Canine Companions to open her heart to raise another puppy, Larue – now, becoming one of over 1,300 volunteers raising future service dogs. 

“Puppy raising shaped who I am today,” Cherie says. “It taught me perseverance and courage. I learned responsibility and compassion.” 

Because of the generosity of volunteer puppy raisers and breeder caretakers, the Canine Companions mission continues to move forward, making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
