edgevolleyballtraining Setters, timing is everything. You should be setting at the peak of your jump—not on the way up. Setting too early not only gives away who you’re setting to (because your hands are no longer neutral), but it also kills your momentum. By setting on the way up, you’re at a lower height for the ball’s trajectory, which limits your power. When you don’t time it right, you can’t transfer the power from your legs to your core, through your elbows, and into your wrists for a clean, fast set.

Here are four key principles to perfect your jump set:

- Tempo Step: This step is crucial for timing your approach and aligning your hips with your target. It helps initiate the movement and prepares your body for a fluid jump and controlled set.

- Early High Hands: Keep your hands high to hold off the block and remain unpredictable to your opponents. This also allows for a quicker wrist release, giving you more control over your sets.

- Setter Triangle: Form a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers behind the ball, not under it. This helps you release the ball quickly using your wrists rather than pushing it with your thumbs. (If your thumbs are getting tired, check your form.)

- No Wrinkles, Then Wrinkles: Start with your palms forward (“no wrinkles”) and create wrist movement as you release (“wrinkles”). This action adds speed and accuracy, helping your sets stay clean and on target.
