Here’s the deal - As a creative, you HAVE to show the value of what you offer. If I showed you a cardboard box and asked you to buy it for $20 without showing you what’s inside, would you do it?

Now imagine if I asked you to buy it for $20 after showing you that the box contained a brand new iPhone? Now $20 doesn’t seem like such a bad deal because I showed you the VALUE of the box.

Asking a client to tell you their budget before ever discussing their vision or the special celebration they’re about to have is like asking them to buy a box without knowing what’s inside.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, knows what luxury balloon designs cost unless they’ve done them before - heck, even a lot of balloon stylists don’t even know how much to charge. So why are we assuming that our client is going to give us a realistic budget without ever speaking to us? It’s our job to first connect with the client, understand their vision, then set realistic expectations for what that vision will cost.

Here’s what you can do instead:
Ask them for a general idea of their vision. Does it include backdrops? How many feet of balloons do they think they’ll need? These types of questions can help guide your conversation with the client so you’re prepared to show the VALUE of what you bring to the table. If it’s not in their budget they will tell you. Then you can adjust the scale of their design to fit accordingly.

Talking about money with clients can be scary, and I get that putting it in your inquiry form can feel less uncomfortable than saying it out loud with them, but if you’re making decisions or assumptions about the client based on that before you ever speak to them, you’re setting yourself up to leave money on the table and to give your client a less-than-ideal experience.

Remember, balloons are balloons. People work with your business for YOU and the relationships you build with them.

So do you agree? Let me know in the comments!
