Cadet Danny Wells embodied  #UtProsim by stepping up to combat the Brush Mountain fire in Catawba. 

Wells was activated at the end of March to combat the Brush Mountain fire in Catawba as a member of Mountain Valley Strike Team with the Virginia Department of Forestry. The wildfire expanded to over 480 acres fueled by challenging weather conditions and low humidity, causing a temporary closure on the Appalachian Trail.

Wells, a student in the College of Natural Resources and Environment and member of the Corps’ Citizen-Leader Track, and his peers were charged with containment and protection of property in the path of the fire. 

“My crew worked for over 13 hours on the fire late into the night to contain it, and then worked to mop it up the next morning. Some of the crew had just come off of another fire to help on this one. It takes a lot of teamwork and communication to engage a fire that can spread quickly. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and do my part on the team. It’s very rewarding to work with my teammates, a few of which are also Virginia Tech students, to help the community.”
