The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing stands among the most iconic sports cars of the 20th century, its legacy rooted in motorsport dominance and groundbreaking engineering. Originally born from the 1952 W194 Le Mans race car, the 300SL was Mercedes-Benz’s answer to Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Lancia’s post-war racing success. With its lightweight lattice chassis, race-derived inline-six engine, and the now-legendary upward-hinged gullwing doors—engineered out of necessity—the 300SL redefined what a sports car could be. Its racing pedigree was cemented with notable performances at the Mille Miglia and Grand Prix of Berne, and the road-going version introduced in 1954 became an instant classic, especially in the American market thanks to importer Max Hoffman.

Chassis number 6500024 is a striking example of this legendary model, finished in Silver over Red upholstery. Delivered new in 1956 and first displayed at the Geneva Auto Show, it was originally painted Elfenbien beige and sold to Swiss industrialist Hans Hürlimann. After an early accident and subsequent factory repairs, the car resurfaced in Texas in 1969, eventually making its way to Mexico where it has remained since. It passed through the hands of noted collector Carlos Hank Rohn before joining the current owner’s family in 1995. Restored by a Pebble Beach-winning specialist and recently serviced, this Gullwing is now offered as an elegant and mechanically sorted classic—ready for prestigious tours or the centerpiece of any world-class collection.
