We get it — even mentioning the word “care” can make your parent or loved one shut down.

To them, it might sound like:
“You think I need a care home.”
 “You think I’m sick.”
 “You think I can’t manage.”

But what we’re really talking about… is companionship. Support that adds to their life.

Here’s how to start the conversation with empathy and clarity:
💙Lead with love.
“I’ve been thinking about ways to make your weeks more enjoyable and a little easier.”
💙Focus on what they gain.
“A companion could help with housework and shopping, share a cup of tea and a chat, or even just pop by to check in. Someone who gets you.”
💙Avoid the word “care” (at first).
Try “support,” “company,” or “an extra hand” — words that don’t feel like a threat to their independence.
💙Include them in the process.
“This would be your person. Let’s find someone you click with.”

Sometimes the hardest part is just beginning the chat — but it doesn’t have to be heavy.

Have you tried talking to a parent or loved one about this before? What worked (or didn’t)?
