Elizabeth Catlett spent over 60 years using her art to fight for humanity. As a Black woman, mother, and Mexican citizen, she created sculptures and prints that amplified the voices of those often left out of history.

Born in 1915 in Washington, DC, Catlett faced many educational and professional barriers as a Black woman, but never gave up on her dream of becoming an artist. In 1946, she moved to Mexico and joined a group of artists dedicated to using art for social change. While in Mexico, she still remained deeply committed to the Black liberation struggle in the US.

Catlett’s work celebrated strength, pride, and justice. Her legacy reminds us that art can be a tool for change, giving voice to those who need to be heard.
