OPEN MIC: Sophomore Jeremy Boulter wanted to give a space where LGBTQIA+ member can feel safe to express their feelings, so Boutler came up with the open mic event. The event occurred during MAC Pride Week on April 2 in the library.

The speakers during the event offered different perspectives about their queer identity, their own experiences and some original poetry.

Boulter spoke about the value of community and how to foster it in times of need.

“It was honestly really powerful and inspiring to see so many people go up and share,” Boulter said. “I hope we can make it a yearly Pride Week tradition!”

Boulter first got the idea on the day after President Trump was re-elected. A few friends of Boulter attended a queer open mic with him, which helped Boulter to express his feelings at the time.

“I wanted to host a similar event at McCallum that was more accessible to queer students,” Boulter said. “So that they could also have an opportunity to make themselves heard and get the support they need, especially during a time like this.”

Boulter joined Spectrum for similar reasons as fellow student leader sophomore Josh Bernard. They both want to be able to create a safe and comfortable space at the school for queer people. Boulter most looks forward to seeing more people share their art and experiences at next year’s Pride Week.
