Good Afternoon, Friends,

Today is National Dolphin Day! A special day to commemorate one of the smartest mammals in the world. Dolphins are social, intelligent, and friendly creatures, closely related to whales and porpoises, and emotionally, very much like humans.

There are some 42 species of dolphins and seven species of porpoises.

Some dolphins prefer the shallow waters of the shores, while others live and play further out in the open ocean. There are five River Dolphin species that live in the waterways of Asia and South America. Orcas are the only dolphins who live in the Arctic and Antarctic, thanks in no small part to their immense size, which protects them from the frigid temperatures at the poles.

Dolphins are marine mammals, with their pregnancies lasting between nine and sixteen months, and their young drinking milk.
 
Dolphins are social creatures who live in pods, allowing them to protect one another, create social bonds, and hunt for food more effectively. Dolphins subsist primarily on fish, squid, and crustaceans. 

Orcas are great examples of the kinds of family bonds one constantly finds among non-human animals. Orca offspring stay with their mothers for life, while the entire group helps to raise and care for the young. Elder females are considered the pod leaders, teaching their daughters when and where to look for salmon, places to rest and give birth, and the best passageways to use during migration. 

Every single species of dolphin and whale faces threats due to hunting, whaling, pollution, and vessel strikes, among others. Lately, orcas have been observed attacking boats, and researchers posit that the behavior may be attributable to a traumatic history of vessel strikes passed down through the generations, from mothers to daughters. 

While we don’t have oceans in Colorado, we truly do live in a global ecosystem, and it is incumbent upon us to learn as much as we can about all living things and the role each of us plays in protecting the planet we all share. Here’s to Dolphins! 🐬
