This week’s #DJspotlight is DJ Rhinestone! DJing is her main squeeze, but she also plays an active role on the content team for KCPR. As for what’s typically played on their show, “Anything weird, tacky or otherworldly is fair game.”

“I love music that blurs the lines between the coldly electronic and the totally human and visceral, and @fkatwigs and @santigold are my favorite examples of that. I've also started to get into 90s big beat and techno–like The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, and the like. It was the soundtrack of the rave scene back in the day, and that's usually how I wrap up my show.”

When asked about one of the records that got them through last year, DJ Rhinestone easily chooses “STFU!” by @rinasonline . “I love nu metal but it can be so overwhelmingly macho, and hearing that style be revamped in 2020 by a queer woman of color is just so freaking cool. Her rage is only bolstered, not compromised, by her femininity.”

An interesting factoid about DJ Rhinestone is they are a part of the live music scene in SLO! Playing lead guitar and singing lead vocal for more than one band, Rhinestone embodies the talent and spirit of musicians on the Central Coast.
