This week, our at-home #DJspotlight is Big Tex! In addition to his weekly shows, Big Tex took over as the Programming/Music Director at KCPR in January. 

When asked about making his show he said, "Having that sweet, sweet mid-morning spot, I get to build my shows to include a lot of diverse genres. Recently, my shows have been pretty light, but I do love to mix it up from time to time. I typically start the morning off with people like @devendrabanhart and @bigthiefmusic then move into the afternoon with acts like @carolineplz and @destroyer_band . I’m late to the party, but I have probably played (Sandy) Alex G on every other show recently. He’s incredible! Also, my rule is that it’s not a Big Tex show if there isn’t at least one song from @adriannelenker somewhere in it.”

When thinking about the music that has gotten him through the last year, Big Tex would say that “The Hissing of Summer Lawns” by @jonimitchell is the first album that comes to mind. “I have fond memories of this album pre-COVID, and it really felt like a friend in quarantine. On THOSL, I find a new favorite every time I listen. I know it’s a weird recommendation, but I think it’s worth the listen. This was Joni’s first real dive into making jazz, and I think it is wonderful. When I moved back to SLO in July of 2020, I bought it on CD for my car from @booboorecords and now I listen to it as I am driving. I also recently bought a live CD of hers from Boo Boo that has some of her best songs on it. What can I say, I am a Joni Mitchell superfan.”
