#MoodySpotlight: Since middle school, Lia Hoang knew she wanted writing to be at the heart of her career. Now, as a third-year utjschool student with a minor in business and media and entertainment industries, she’s turning that passion into action.

“Over the years, my love for writing evolved into a love for creating compelling stories across any form of media such as broadcast or social media, with writing serving as the foundation for that.”

Lia chose #TEXASMoody for its hands-on learning, knowing it would shape her future beyond the classroom. “I’ve had exposure to writing in-depth articles, interviewing students and professionals such as Austin City Council members, editing videos, posting live updates through social media and more just in my classes.”

Lia is the social media intern for utjschool and utexasslhs here at #TEXASMoody, where she’s been putting her video editing and production skills to work! She’s also a former social content intern at Austinites 101. “This was a neat opportunity that allowed me to explore Austin in a new way, exposing me to people, places, and experiences that I would not have seen without this role.”

Beyond that, Lia is a sports reporter for The Daily Texan, a news anchor and reporter for TSTV’s Good Morning Longhorns and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Lia looks forward to heading to utnyprogram this summer to work, learn and explore the Big Apple!

Her favorite Moody memory was interviewing acclaimed sports reporter Christine Brennan as a freshman. “Being asked by my professor, Kevin Robbins, to interview a reporter who has covered some of sports’ biggest moments, including the 2024 Paris Olympics, was an incredible opportunity. It really showed how much Moody professors believe in their students.”

The college has allowed Lia to grow, explore and push her creative boundaries. “Whether it’s exploring audio editing in “Digital Storytelling” or finding descriptive ways to convey your opinion in “Lifestyle Journalism,” I’m constantly learning more ways to share my voice across many platforms. Choosing Moody College has allowed me to grow in so many ways, and I cannot imagine being anywhere else!”
